The app is designed to be intuitive and works with both keyboard shortcuts and the mouse. To create mind maps quickly and efficiently, it's worth learning the keyboard shortcuts.
You can start creating a mind map right away, without signing up. Your mind map is kept in your browser and moves into your account automatically if you sign up for free later.
A sample mind map is shown by default. To create a new mind map, click “New mind map” in the menu at the top left. The new mind map opens immediately. When you are signed in, it is saved automatically from then on.
Without an account it is kept in your browser; “Save” in the menu creates a free account and moves it there.
A new mind map starts with its root node. Double-click it to edit the text and enter the topic of your mind map, then press [Enter] to finish. Press [Shift]+[Enter] to add a line break inside a branch.
Add a new branch by right-clicking the root node and choosing “New sub-branch”, or press [Insert] or [Tab] – at this level it becomes a main branch. Double-click it to edit its text as well. With a main branch selected, simply press [Enter] to add more main branches.
To delete a branch, click to select it and press [Delete]. You can also right-click it and choose the matching option.
Branches with sub-branches can be collapsed and expanded with the small circle on the branch, so you keep the overview even in large mind maps.
To move a branch, click it and drag it to the position you want while holding the mouse button.
Drop a branch onto another node to attach it there – all of its sub-branches move along with it. The bar at the bottom lets you realign the whole mind map automatically at any time.
Right-click a branch for more settings, for example to add an image to the branch or to change its text size, text colour or background colour.
You can also add an emoji, links, comments, file attachments and tasks to a branch, or connect any two branches with a connecting line.
The bar at the bottom lets you switch colour themes; the menu at the top left lets you save the mind map in various file formats.
Signed-in users have their mind maps saved online automatically and can keep working on them from any device. “Mind maps” in the menu takes you to all of your mind maps. Deleted mind maps go to the trash first and can be restored from there.
Use “Export” in the menu at the top left to save your mind map as a PDF, PNG image, SVG vector, Word document (.docx) or PowerPoint presentation (.pptx) – or “Print” to print it directly.
Exporting and printing require a free account.
Every mind map can be shared via a public link, which can be password-protected if you like. You can also invite individual people by email – as viewers to look at it or as editors to work on it together. Changes appear for everyone in real time.
With the Team plan you create a team under “Teams” in the user menu and invite members by email. Every member gets the full Pro feature set; the team owner pays for the seats. You can make members administrators and organise them into subgroups, for example by department or class. In the share dialog you then share a mind map with the whole team or a subgroup in one click – as viewers or editors. The AI actions are a shared pool for all members.
The AI assistant creates a complete mind map on any topic. For a single branch it generates subtopics or study questions, rewrites text, adds fitting emojis, finds tasks or translates the entire mind map into another language.
Every branch can hold tasks with a status, start and end date and assignees; all tasks of a mind map are collected in the bar at the bottom. The history also lets you restore a mind map to an earlier state.
